There are actually a few ways to set up and use discounts/coupons.
1) Enter coupons through your Mal's account (best option for coupons).
If you use this method, the customer can enter a coupon at checkout. You can enter coupons within Mals that the customer can enter at checkout. Go to your Mal's account, "Cart Setup", then "Discount Vouchers". When you set your coupon, make sure you enter "CMMYYNNNN" in the voucher mask box. Then next to the coupon you create, you can enter an alias like "NEW20" or whatever you choose, and the customer can enter that voucher code within their shopping cart and click "recalculate" to receive the discount.
2) You could also use the (Members) feature within your store admin.
Within your store admin, when you click "Members", there is a button to get a discount link to give out to your customers. You can place that link anywhere on your site, or you might just want to or give it out to select people. Anyone who clicks on the link or uses the link the get to your site will automatically get that discount.
3) Sales/Markdowns. - If you want to put your entire store on sale, or just a particular category for instance, you can go to your store admin > Global Updates (lower left side), and follow the steps.
